Cold weather no match for red-hot rugby action in Hartswater


Cold weather and wet conditions could not stop the nearly 2 000 passionate supporters from letting rugby fever heat things up at Hartswater High School as the Frances Baard Rugby Region hosted a thrilling third-place playoff and final on Saturday 20 June.

The atmosphere was electric as families, supporters, sponsors and rugby lovers came out in numbers to witness community rugby at its very best. Players showed heart, commitment and pride for their clubs.

In the final between Hartswater Rugby Club and Kimberley Rugby Club’s Duikers, two of the strongest teams in the competition went head-to-head in a tough, emotional contest that kept supporters on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.

Duikers showed championship character, discipline and composure under pressure to overcome a determined Hartswater side with a 29–13 victory, claiming the Frances Baard Rugby crown after a hard-fought battle.

Universal claims bronze in attacking spectacle

In the third-place playoff, Universal RFC from Kimberley showed the fighting spirit and history of one of the oldest clubs in the region. In a physical encounter against Sables of Kimberley Rugby Club, Universal refused to back down and delivered when it mattered most, securing a memorable 51-33 victory.

It was an open, attacking game filled with running rugby, big tackles and determination from both sides. Universal’s ability to finish opportunities proved the difference as they claimed the bronze position with pride.

The weekend was not only about results, but about the growth of rugby in the region. The scenes in Hartswater proved once again that community rugby is alive and strong, bringing together different towns, clubs and generations.

Frances Baard Rugby Region thanked Hartswater Rugby Club for hosting an outstanding finals weekend, as well as all clubs, referees, medical teams, volunteers, sponsors, government partners and supporters who contributed to a successful 2026 season.

“The weather was cold, but the passion for rugby was burning. This weekend showed the heartbeat of Frances Baard Rugby. Rugby was the winner.”
