The dramatic academic turnaround at Homevale High School in Kimberley – from 21,1% in 2023, to 46,2% in 2024, and 86,7% in 2025 – is the result of multi-layered strategies implemented over time.

Raadiya Amien, acting principal since July 2024, said the first step was rebuilding learner confidence, particularly after previous years of poor results.

“Many learners had internalised a belief that success was unattainable, so a key focus was changing that mindset. Learners were motivated through regular one-on-one and group engagements where clear expectations were set, and realistic but challenging goals were agreed upon.”

Key interventions included:

  • strengthening curriculum management to ensure full syllabus coverage
  • introducing structured afternoon, weekend, and holiday classes
  • using learner performance data to identify gaps and target support
  • implementing tighter monitoring of attendance, punctuality, and assessment
  • improving communication with parents and caregivers
  • establishing a culture of accountability among staff and learners

Teachers continuously monitored progress and provided constructive feedback, ensuring that learners understood where they were improving and where additional effort was required.

“Small achievements were acknowledged and celebrated to reinforce positive behaviour and commitment.”

Learners were exposed to discussions about life beyond matric, including further education, training, and employment opportunities. This helped them see the relevance of their hard work and encouraged a sense of purpose.

Emotional and moral support from educators played a significant role, as learners knew they were supported, believed in, and held accountable.

Over time, this consistent encouragement, combined with structured academic support, fostered resilience, discipline, and a renewed belief in their own potential, Amien remarked.

Teachers remained committed

This was achieved despite teachers facing challenges including limited resources, large class sizes, and learners dealing with difficult socio-economic circumstances.

“Despite these realities, teachers remain committed, often sacrificing personal time to support learners academically and emotionally. Their resilience and dedication have been key to the school’s turnaround,” said Amien, who emphasised the teachers’ professionalism, adaptability, and willingness to implement new strategies.

Many learners are affected by unemployment, household responsibilities, limited access to learning resources, and exposure to social challenges.

“As a school, we strive to provide a stable, structured environment that offers learners consistency, support, and hope, whilst working collaboratively with parents and community stakeholders.”

Long-term goal set

This year’s matriculants are being supported through early identification of academic challenges, consistent monitoring, and regular motivational engagements. Clear expectations have been set from the start of the year, and learners are encouraged to take ownership of their academic journey – not only to maintain results, but to build confidence and independence.

Over the next two years, Homevale’s focus is on strengthening academic foundations in lower grades, expanding learner support programmes, improving discipline and attendance, and advocating for improved infrastructure.

“Our long-term goal is to establish Homevale High School as a consistently performing institution that the community can be proud of,” Amien concluded.
