MAUN – Moremi Game Reserve in Botswana is currently closed due to flooding caused by ongoing heavy rains.
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism of Botswana issued a public notice on Thursday 5 March, informing the public that the Moremi Game Reserve is closed due to flooding as a result of the ongoing heavy rains. The closure is necessary to ensure public safety, as many routes within the reserve are inaccessible.
Large parts of Botswana experienced significant and widespread heavy rainfall, driven by a regional weather pattern that has resulted in above-normal rainfall for the 2025-’26 summer season. The relentless rain, particularly during February and early March, has caused flooding in several areas, affecting travel and infrastructure.
The closure came into effect on 5 March, and will be enforced until 26 March.
All visitors, including overlanders, are advised to check with the Department of Wildlife and National Parks for updates on the reserve’s road status.
Furthermore, tourists intending to visit the Central Kalahari Game Reserve are advised of possible flooding in the northern part of the reserve.
The ministry wishes to emphasise that the closure affects road access into the reserve; therefore, the facilities within the reserve that use air services are not affected by the closure.
The ministry will continue to monitor the situation and update accordingly.
