On Saturday, 31 May, in Calvinia, the Frances Baard Rugby Region’s U21 men’s team achieved a historic feat by winning, back-to-back, the Griquas Regional Championship title for 2025. On 17 May in Kimberley, the Frances Baard women’s team were the winners at the women’s rugby regional tournament.

Demonstrating exceptional skill, unity and resilience, the young athletes secured their victory in a highly competitive tournament.

In their opening match, they defeated the Fears team from the Van Druten Region with a score of 38 โ€“ 24. In this match, Stephan du Toit from Frances Baard was announced Man of the Match. Following this, they faced the tournament hosts and favourites, Logan, and triumphed with a 28 โ€“ 10 victory.

The final was a showcase of dominance against Namakwaland, with Frances Baard winning convincingly (26 โ€“ 3) to secure the title.

Head coach Josef Molale โ€“ along with assistant coaches Vernon Guss, Lawrence Lemmetjies and Jonathan Adendorf โ€“ played a pivotal role in developing the players’ skills, instilling discipline, and fostering a winning mentality. Their strategic guidance and unwavering commitment were instrumental in navigating the challenges of the tournament and ultimately securing the championship.

Support from the region’s leadership also played a vital role. Chairman Romeo Syfers and secretary Moira Januarie traveled to Calvinia to cheer on the team, demonstrating their commitment to youth development and rugby excellence within the community.

Behind the scenes, team manager Roderique Januarie provided crucial leadership and organisation, ensuring the team remained focused and motivated throughout the tournament.

This victory highlights the emerging talent within the Frances Baard region and marks a milestone in its rugby history, says Syfers.
