CAPE TOWN – Stormers captain Ruhan Nel has moved to put out a fire sparked by head coach John Dobson’s eyebrow-raising comments earlier this week, insisting that Cardiff Rugby should not be taken lightly – despite Dobson’s assertion that they represent the “easiest” quarter-final draw in the URC playoffs.
Speaking on CapeTalk, Dobson ignited a media storm when he appeared to downplay the threat posed by the Welsh region, stating: “It’s probably the easiest of the quarter-finals. Sounds arrogant and presumptuous, but I think if I was to choose a quarter-finalist, I would probably choose them. It’s the first time they’ve been in a quarter-final.”
The remarks drew immediate attention, but on Friday 29 May, Nel was quick to add crucial context, clarifying that Dobson’s words were rooted in logistics, not arrogance.

Setting the record straight
“The nice thing is that we faced Cardiff two weeks ago,” Nel told reporters. “I think Dobbo referred to it earlier in the week, saying it was the easier quarter-final – but that’s in terms of analysis, your workload’s not as much. By no means did we say Cardiff is an easy team.”
Nel was emphatic on that point, reminding those present of a sobering reality: Cardiff beat the Stormers the last time the two sides met.
“I mean, they beat us, right? We saw they were way better than us,” he said plainly.
A fresher playbook
According to Nel, the true advantage of facing Cardiff lies in preparation efficiency rather than any perceived weakness in the opposition.
“It’s just from a workload point of view. The players already have a picture in mind. We’ve seen the plays, the coaches have done the analysis, so it just lightens the load a bit over the two weeks,” he explained.
“You don’t have to spend as many hours as you would if you were facing a team you last played in round three of the URC.”
That familiarity, Nel believes, could prove decisive – with the Stormers having had the luxury of reviewing exactly where things went wrong in Cardiff and arriving at Saturday’s match with a clear plan of correction.
“We’ve obviously seen the shortcomings, what we wanted to do against them in Cardiff. And it’s great because the memory is still fresh from playing them. Two weeks, good prep on the field, bodies are rested – so it’s bound to be a good game,” he said.
Eyes on the prize
Dobson, for his part, showed no shortage of confidence in his side’s ability to advance, wrapping up his earlier remarks with a statement of intent: “That’s our job and I’m pretty confident that we’ll do it.”
Whether the Stormers can back up that confidence – and avenge their recent defeat to Cardiff – remains to be seen when the two sides face off on Saturday 30 May at 15:30.
