Teenage talent Markus Muller set for historic debut as youngest Stormers’ player

The Stormers are poised to make history on Saturday 25 April when 18-year-old Markus Muller takes the field against Glasgow Warriors, becoming the youngest player ever to represent the Cape Town franchise in the United Rugby Championship.

Coach John Dobson has named the promising teenager on the bench for the crucial URC clash at DHL Stadium, with kick-off scheduled for 13:45.

The decision reflects Dobson’s commitment to nurturing talent from within the Stormers’ development pathway.

Timing is everything

Dobson explained that the timing of Muller’s debut was carefully considered, particularly with the young star set to join the Junior Boks squad for the U20 Rugby World Championship beginning Monday.

“We wanted to play Markus this season,” Dobson stated. “He’s a great player, and it’s important to show that if you come through our system, you’ll get an opportunity.”

The coach emphasised the urgency behind the decision, citing the packed fixture list ahead.

“Next week against Ulster will also be a must-win, whatever happens tomorrow. Then the game after that [away to Cardiff] will also be a must-win, and then the game after that [a quarter-final].”

Dobson was concerned that without action now, Muller might complete the entire season without gaining valuable first-team experience. “I don’t want him going to the U20 [World] Championship or [playing in] the Currie Cup without having had this experience.”

Flexible options

The coach didn’t hide his admiration for the young centre, describing him as “an exception” with “something special”.

Tactically, Muller’s inclusion provides Dobson with multiple options in the backline. “Sacha [Feinberg-Mngomezulu] can go to the back [to fullback], Ruhan [Nel] can go into 12, Markus can go there or to 13,” he explained.

While Muller likely won’t be the first replacement off the bench, Dobson has mapped out a clear plan for his debut. “Our plan is to give him 10 or 15 minutes at a high level. He’s probably not the first guy on, but we want him to experience it.”

The match represents more than just a debut – it’s a statement about the Stormers’ commitment to developing homegrown talent and providing pathways for exceptional young players to reach the highest level.
