CAPE TOWN – The Stormers delivered a commanding performance at Cape Town Stadium on Saturday afternoon (30 May), dismantling Cardiff 44-21 in their United Rugby Championship quarter-final to book their place in the last four of the competition.
Billed as a revenge fixture following Cardiff’s victory over the Stormers in the final league match of the regular season, the home side wasted little time in reasserting their authority – particularly up front, where their scrum proved an unstoppable weapon throughout the afternoon.
Slow start, quick turnaround
The opening exchanges were scrappy, with both sides guilty of unforced errors during an error-laden first ten minutes. Cardiff threatened early, spending a sustained period camped inside the Stormers’ 22, before gifting possession back through a forward pass. From that reprieve, the Stormers began to find their rhythm.
A rolling maul nearly opened the scoring, but flanker Paul de Villiers lost control just metres from the line. The momentum, however, remained firmly with the hosts – and when the scrum began to dominate, the direction of the match became increasingly clear.
It was Cardiff who drew first blood in the 20th minute, when a defensive lapse allowed winger Cameron Winnett to finish after a turnover, with Ioan Lloyd converting for a 7-0 lead. But the Stormers responded swiftly and emphatically.
André-Hugo Venter crashed over from a lineout maul to level matters at 7-7, before Ntuthuko Mchunu powered over from a set move to give the Stormers their first lead of the match at 14-7. Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, impressive throughout, converted both scores.
Cardiff’s indiscipline then compounded their problems, with Keiron Assiratti sin-binned for repeated infringements. The Stormers punished them further just before the break, as Damian Willemse’s clever play put Leolin Zas away in the corner, stretching the lead to 21-7 at half-time.
Cardiff fight back
Cardiff emerged with renewed energy after the interval. Taine Basham burrowed over from a 5-metre scrum, and Lloyd’s conversion reduced the deficit to 21-14, raising hopes of a dramatic comeback.
Those hopes were dashed quickly, however, as Feinberg-Mngomezulu intercepted a wayward Cardiff cross-kick and raced away to score– though he departed shortly after with an ankle injury.
With Jurie Matthee stepping into the flyhalf role, Cardiff clawed back to 26-21 through a James Botham maul try in the 60th minute. But once again, discipline let the Welsh side down.
Javan Sebastian was yellow-carded for persistent infringements, and the Stormers made their numerical advantage count immediately – De Villiers finally getting his name on the scoresheet from a maul to push the lead to 31-21.
Matthee added a penalty and a late conversion as the Stormers closed out the match in style, with JJ Kotzé touching down in the 77th minute and a Matthee penalty on the final hooter completing a dominant display.
The 44-21 final score flatters Cardiff somewhat, who showed fight throughout – but the Stormers’ set-piece supremacy and clinical finishing ultimately proved the difference. John Dobson’s side will carry serious momentum into the semi-finals.
