The Majola brothers from Welkom have made their school and community proud after competing at the South African Open Chess Championship in Bellville, Cape Town, from 2 to 5 July.
Olam Majola (10) and his younger brother, Zoe Majola (9), are learners at St Helena Primary School and members of the Lejweleputswa Legends Chess Club. Both competed in the highly competitive Under-11 section against some of the country’s top young chess players.
Olam delivered an impressive performance, winning four of his seven matches. His strong showing earned him first place among the players who finished on four points. He was also recognised with a special award as the tournament’s Most Promising Player, highlighting his potential as one of South Africa’s rising young chess talents.
Zoe also gained valuable experience by competing against strong opposition at national level, adding to his development as a young chess player.
The brothers’ participation and Olam’s achievement reflect the growing strength of chess in the Lejweleputswa region and serve as an inspiration to other young players at St Helena Primary School.
