A head-on collision occurred between a Provincial Traffic vehicle and an Intercape bus on the N2 near Jeffreys Bay this morning, 27 April.

According to the Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose, one female is trapped inside the traffic vehicle. “No passengers from the bus have, at this point, required transport to hospital,” he said, while noting that emergency services are on the scene attending to the situation.

He added that a female traffic officer has tragically lost her life following a head-on collision between a state vehicle she was driving and a long-distance bus on the N2 in Jeffreys Bay.

“It is alleged that the officer was travelling back to her station after responding to the scene of an earlier accident when the crash occurred, and she was declared dead on impact.”

Binqose noted that all occupants of the bus escaped unharmed.

“The road remains closed to traffic as recovery and clean-up operations continue,” he said. “A case of culpable homicide has been opened at Jeffreys Bay SAPS for further investigation.”

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha, extended his condolences to her family. “This is a deeply painful loss for us as the Department of Transport, as we have lost a dedicated member in the line of duty. At the time of her death, she had just responded to another accident that happened earlier,” he said. “I call on road users, motorists in particular, to exercise caution.”
