KUGOMPO CITY – Police in the Eastern Cape has heightened its state of readiness across the province ahead of planned nationwide demonstrations scheduled for 30 June.

The heightened police readiness comes amid growing tensions linked to anti-migrant demonstrations taking place in parts of South Africa.

Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata has activated contingency plans in all eight policing districts, with additional personnel and resources being deployed to maintain public order and ensure community safety.

According to police spokesperson Captain Majola Nkohli, law enforcement agencies have identified potential hotspots across the province and are preparing for various scenarios linked to the planned protests.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will also provide support in areas affected by gang-related violence.

As part of the preparations, Joint Operational Centres (JOCs) will be activated in all eight districts and will report directly to the Provincial Joint Operational Centre (ProvJOC) to facilitate coordination, intelligence sharing and real-time monitoring of developments.

Ncata said police fully recognise the constitutional right of citizens to participate in peaceful demonstrations but warned that criminal behaviour would not be tolerated.

“While we acknowledge and respect the constitutional right of citizens to engage in peaceful demonstrations, we will not hesitate to act against any acts of lawlessness, violence, intimidation or criminality,” he said.

The provincial commissioner added that police capacity had been strengthened across the Eastern Cape to deal with any eventuality.

“We have bolstered our manpower across the province and are calling on all protesters to conduct themselves responsibly and within the bounds of the law. No private person(s) will be allowed to assume the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement agencies,” Ncata said.

Police have also appealed to community leaders and protest organisers to work closely with authorities to ensure that demonstrations remain peaceful and orderly.
