The Pringle Proms, hosted by Brian Berkman, will feature the Helderberg’s own Hermanus Schmidt alongside Heinrich Sutton in a celebration of European piano music at the Pringle Bay United church this Saturday (1 August).

The programme includes works by Bach, Mozart, Haydn, Liszt and Rachmaninoff, spanning three centuries of musical brilliance.

Schmidt, a talented pianist from Somerset West, will showcase his artistry in solo recitals and a duet with Sutton, promising an unforgettable afternoon of classical music.

The Grade 12 learner at Paul Roos Gymnasium, began teaching himself piano during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown at the age of 12. His exceptional talent led to formal studies and he is now a student of Professor Mario Nell at Stellenbosch University. Hermanus has won numerous prestigious competitions, including the Johann Vos, Atterbury National, and Hennie Joubert national piano competitions, earning multiple special awards along the way. Reflecting on his passion, he says: “Music gives me the same calm and happy feeling as a sunset.”

His extraordinary rise continues to inspire and he is set to captivate audiences at the Pringle Proms.

Adding a twist, the event explores the culinary tastes of these composers, with composer-inspired dishes available at Menucha Coffee & Crafts and Hanging Rock Kitchen. Menucha will serve pastries, hot chocolate and composer-themed meals from 09:00, while Hanging Rock Kitchen offers a Rachmaninoff-inspired pizza and German beers for dinner.
