Following a dramatic round of fixtures on Saturday (25 July) the stakes in local club rugby have intensified as the picture for next year’s restructured Western Province club rugby format becomes clearer.

With four home-and-away Super Leagues (A through D) set to debut, every point in these final regular-season matches carries immense weight.

Helderberg, sitting comfortably in second place on the Super League A log, has already secured their spot in the top tier for 2027. They continue their strong campaign as they prepare to host student powerhouse SU Maties under the floodlights tonight (Wednesday 29 July).

In Super League B, only the top eight teams will retain their status for 2027, while the bottom eight (positions 9–16) face relegation to Super League C. All Saints, currently on 39 points after completing their 14 league fixtures, suffered a heavy 43-21 defeat to Violets at the weekend. This result leaves them anxiously awaiting Violets’ final matches, as a drop to ninth place would mean relegation.

Macassar, guaranteed a spot in Super League B for 2027 after a dominant season, sits in second place on the log. They host Violets on Saturday (1 August), aiming to solidify their position.

Meanwhile, St George’s, languishing in 14th place, confirmed their relegation to Super League C after a 35-20 loss to Collegians. They will look to rebuild momentum when they face Kraaifontein on Saturday.

Super League C’s 2027 structure features three tiers: positions 1 to 4 remain in SLC, positions 5 to 12 move to the newly established Super League D, and positions 13 to 16 are relegated to the regional leagues.

Strand RFC secured a crucial 21-19 victory over Raithby Universals, boosting their chances of finishing in 12th place and securing a spot in Super League D. Sir Lowrians also cemented their position in the middle bracket with a 20-12 win over Delft United. They now prepare for an exciting Helderberg derby against RU on Saturday.

For Strand United, a 43-10 defeat to Kylemore confirmed their winless season and relegation to the regional league for 2027. In the regional structure, only the league winner earns automatic promotion to Super League D. Gordon’s Bay Pioneers will return to Northern League in 2027 following a key 28-0 (forfeit) victory over Excelsior, while Faure, despite a spirited effort, fell 34-17 to log leaders Blue Stars United. Faure will remain in the Northern League next season.
