The race for survival and promotion in Western Province club rugby leagues intensified this past weekend, with crucial points on the line and high-scoring encounters across local fields.
The standout story of Super League B belongs to St George’s, who kept their survival hopes alive with a 31-24 victory over Bellville at Gustrouw Sports Ground on Saturday (20 June).

Sitting in 14th position with 16 points, the Lulu Boys showed character to hold off a dangerous Bellville side.
Speaking after the match, St George’s head coach Mirwaan Davids praised his young team’s commitment to their tactical blueprint.
“We tried to play a more free-flowing, running game and be responsible with our choices. We were very commanding in applying our plans and executing the structure. It is a very young team, fighting for the pride and honour of the jersey,” he said.

Despite the win, Davids knows that maintaining their Super League B status will require an improvement in the final weeks.
We need to work on individual and team physical conditioning, as well as the mental side, to apply consistent pressure for both halves, not just one
While the Lulu Boys enjoy a bye this weekend, their next three fixtures are against Vineyards, Belhar and a derby duel against Macassar.

In other Super League B fixtures, front-runners Macassar suffered a rare defeat, falling 36-48 to second-placed Collegians in a high-scoring affair. Despite the loss, the MC Boys remain at the top of Super League B with 39 points from 10 games, with Collegians close behind, but holding two games in hand. All Saints, who did not feature over the weekend, have dropped to third place.
In Super League A, Helderberg solidified their fourth place with a 24-23 away win against Brackenfell, taking them to 33 points.
Super League C delivered high drama. Strand RFC edged out Delft United 38-37 in a tightly contested affair, a crucial win in their fight to get out of the relegation zone.

It was a difficult afternoon for Strand United, however, who were outclassed 57-20 by Gardens. United remain in 15th place with five points.
Sir Lowrians fell 18-23 to fourth-placed Pniël Villagers, leaving them in ninth position with 24 points.

In the Northern League, Faure made a statement by dismantling Blakes 48-17, moving to 34 points and into contention for the top four.
At the other end of the table, Gordon’s Bay Pioneers secured a 41-26 victory over bottom-of-the-log Cloetesville, taking them to 10 points and providing some relief as the regional competition enters its second half.
