In another sensational weekend of Western Province club rugby action, Saturday 23 May was characterised by high-scoring spectacles, milestone celebrations and crucial shifts across the Super League standings.
Helderberg RFC produced a dominant display on home soil, completing a memorable clean sweep against UniMil across all four club teams.
The first team delivered an absolute masterclass, running in 10 tries to secure an emphatic 64-17 victory. Fullback Junior Fortuin opened the floodgates just three minutes in, followed by tries by Darren Hendricks, Pieter Kemp, Jodeci Davids and a brilliant long-range effort from Luke Carew to close out the first half.
The onslaught continued after the break, with Mauritz Swart, Jayden Daniels, Dian Koen, Cena Giliomee and Erhard Lambrecht all dotting down. Flyhalf Michael Visser enjoyed a near-flawless afternoon from the tee, earning backline player of the match honours, while club stalwart Roux Nieuwoudt celebrated his 50th cap by claiming the forward player of the match award. Quinn Visser also marked his milestone 50th cap on the day.
The victory lifts Helderberg to seventh on the Super League A standings with 21 points from seven games, while UniMil remain rooted near the bottom in 15th place with no points.
The battle at the summit of Super League B continues to be a thrilling two-horse race, with Macassar and All Saints both maintaining their perfect, unbeaten starts to the season.
The Olla Boys secured a hard-fought 24-17 win over the CPUT students in a fiery encounter. The hosts started stronger, dominating large periods of the first half. Their early pressure paid off when Junaid Sylvester crossed for the opening try, with Dylan Scholtz adding the conversion. Saints struck again shortly after through an Ewan Pieters try, again converted by Scholtz, to open up a healthy lead.
However, CPUT showed tremendous grit, fighting back with a converted try and a penalty to trail 10-14 at the break.
The second half saw a fired-up CPUT side apply relentless pressure, and ill-discipline nearly cost All Saints dearly โ the referee brandished three yellow cards against the hosts, reducing them to 12 men at one stage.
Despite the numerical disadvantage, the Olla Boys showed immense resilience. Shakeel Jacobs powered over for a crucial try against the run of play, and Antonio Haas slotted the conversion to give the home side the breathing space they needed to seal the win.
