All eyes will be fixed on two massive local club rugby derbies this Saturday (18 July), which carry enormous consequences for the participating clubs.
In Super League B, league-leaders Macassar will square off against a wounded St George’s side in an encounter where contrasting fortunes have created an unpredictable outcome. In Super League C, Strand United is set to battle against neighbours Sir Lowrians in a contest that both camps have classified as a must-win fixture.
Following a heavy 69-21 defeat at the hands of a rampant Belhar side on Saturday (11 July), St George’s finds itself pinned near the bottom of the SLB standings, occupying 13th position with just 18 points from 11 games.
Their defensive vulnerabilities were laid bare at the weekend, pushing their points differential down to a troubling -119.
Their task does not get any easier this coming weekend as they host rivals Macassar. The MC Boys sits proudly at the summit of SLB with 44 points, holding a slender one-point advantage over second-placed Belhar. With nine wins from 11 fixtures, the visitors enter the derby as overwhelming favourites, but in such a derby current form is tossed aside.
The Lulu Boys desperately need points to pull away from the bottom half of the log, while Macassar cannot afford a single misstep if they want to secure direct promotion.
Elsewhere in SLB, All Saints will look to recover from their high-scoring 44-34 loss to Hands & Heart as they host the high-flying Belhar side. The Olla Boys have dropped to sixth place with 38 points and will need an immaculate defensive display to slow down Belhar.
Saturday’s highly anticipated local derby between Strand RFC and Strand United lived up to its physical reputation, with Liga ultimately claiming local bragging rights with a hard-fought 19-5 victory in punishing conditions.
UNITED TRIED HAD
United won the toss and chose to play with the strong wind in the first-half, but Liga struck first with a wide attack to take a 7-0 lead. Capitalising on line-out dominance and tactical kicks, Strand RFC added a controversial try under the posts.
Shortly thereafter, turnover ball saw them dot down in the corner to take a dominate 19-0 lead at half-time.
In a gruelling second half, worsening weather slowed Liga’s attack, while a resilient United had two tries disallowed – one for the player being tackled into touch-in-goal and another for a double movement.
Ramiz Collins finally put United on the board with a late try, but Liga secured the win with the first-half brace of Nathan Jan Fransman and MC Hendricks, plus two conversions by Fransman.

The defeat leaves United rooted to 15th spot on the SLC standings with only five points from 12 games, placing them in direct danger of relegation.
SEASON-DEFINING
This makes their upcoming fixture against Sir Lowrians a season-defining moment. Sir Low are coming off a razor-thin 17-13 loss to Gardens and are perched in ninth place with 26 points.
United will need to cut down on unforced errors to exploit a Sir Low side eager to climb into the mid-table safety zone.
Liga will face a daunting challenge against league leaders Rangers, while Raithby Universals, sitting 10th with 25 points, will host Eerste River.
In Super League A, the basin’s top-tier representative, Helderberg currently sits comfortably in third place with 43 points after a solid campaign. They host 11th-placed Kuils River this weekend, aiming to narrow the gap on log leaders Villager.
In the Northern League, Faure claimed a sensational 29-21 away victory over Excelsior, securing their third place standing with 44 points. Gordon’s Bay Pioneers were forced to forfeit their match against Stellenbosch-Coronation (28-0).
GBP, currently 10th with 10 points and a point deduction penalty, face a severe test of resolve when they host Excelsior, desperate to restore club pride.

– SLA: Helderberg vs Kuils River;
– SLB: All Saints vs Belhar, St George’s vs Macassar;
