Cape Town International Airport has resumed full runway operations after a Kenya Airways aircraft suffered a tyre failure on landing, forcing flight diversions and grounding international departures on Tuesday afternoon.

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) confirmed that Kenya Airways flight KQ784 experienced the tyre failure whilst landing at approximately 15:25 on Tuesday, leaving the aircraft disabled on the airport’s primary runway.

The incident temporarily disrupted operations at one of South Africa’s busiest airports, with arriving flights diverted to alternate airports whilst airport teams worked to remove the stranded aircraft.

Domestic departures continued during the disruption, but wide-body international departures were temporarily grounded as the disabled aircraft blocked the primary runway.

ACSA said airport teams worked with Kenya Airways and other stakeholders to recover the aircraft and restore normal runway operations.

By Wednesday morning, the airport confirmed that runway operations had fully resumed. However, ACSA warned that passengers may still experience delays as airlines work to bring their schedules back to normal.

Passengers travelling through Cape Town International Airport are advised to check directly with their airline or use the ACSA Mobile App for the latest information on flight times, delays and any operational changes.

The airport thanked passengers for their patience as operations return to normal.

No injuries were reported in the incident, and the cause of the tyre failure is expected to be investigated by aviation authorities.
