Acting Minister of Police Firoz Cachalia has called a high-level meeting with senior law enforcement officials to tackle the growing crisis of illegal initiation schools and the deaths of young initiates across South Africa.
The meeting, held on Tuesday, brought together the Acting National Commissioner of SAPS, Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, Deputy National Commissioners, Provincial Commissioners, Premiers and Members of the Executive Councils responsible for Community Safety.
So far more than 50 deaths have been recorded during this winter initiation season and 48 in the previous summer initiation season.
Government response to cultural practice crisis
The gathering follows a recent engagement convened by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa, which brought together key stakeholders to address illegal initiation schools and the tragic loss of young lives whilst protecting legitimate cultural practices.
Lieutenant General Tebello Mosikili, Deputy National Commissioner for Policing and Chairperson of the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure, presented a detailed report on initiation-related deaths, arrests by law enforcement, and the number of registered legal initiation schools compared to those operating unlawfully.
The presentation provided an operational picture that officials said would inform targeted interventions by law enforcement and other government departments.

Provincial challenges highlighted
Provincial Commissioners raised operational and coordination challenges experienced across the country, stressing the need for stronger coordination between government, law enforcement and all stakeholders responsible for regulating and overseeing initiation schools.
Minister Cachalia acknowledged the concerns and resolved that they will form part of a report to be submitted to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. The report will include practical recommendations aimed at strengthening intergovernmental coordination and ensuring a more integrated approach to addressing illegal initiation schools and preventing avoidable deaths.
Way forward
The meeting resolved to enhance collaboration between provincial governments, SAPS, traditional leaders and recognised initiation school leadership to improve compliance with applicable legislation, facilitate information sharing and strengthen enforcement efforts against illegal operators.
