CAPE TOWN – Cape Town International Airport’s primary runway was temporarily shut this afternoon after a Kenya Airways aircraft suffered a tyre failure during landing, leaving it disabled on the strip.

The incident involving flight KQ784 occurred at approximately 15:25. Airport teams are working with the airline and relevant stakeholders to safely recover the aircraft and restore runway operations as soon as possible.

“As a result, all arriving flights are currently being diverted to alternate airports,” says an Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) spokesperson.

“Domestic departures continue to operate, while wide-body international departures are temporarily unable to operate. Airport teams are working closely with the airline and all relevant stakeholders to safely recover the aircraft and restore normal runway operations as soon as possible.”

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) has urged passengers travelling to or from Cape Town International to check directly with their airline or the ACSA mobile app for the latest information on delays and diversions before heading to the airport.
