BLOEMFONTEIN – Getting a clean audit is not supposed to make the news. It is the way organisations are meant to be operated – be it public or private entities.
An excellent example of a well-run institution that manages to get continued clean audits, is the War Museum in Bloemfontein – a museum that falls under the national Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
The War Museum received the Public Finance Management Act (PFMA) Clean Audit award from the Auditor-General (AG) on Friday 31 July.
For the 2025-’26 financial year the War Museum has obtained a clean audit report with no findings for the fourth consecutive year. Also, the museum had no fruitless and wasteful or irregular expenditure for the past 16 consecutive years. All performance targets were met for the past eight years, consecutively.
In the management report on the Audit of the War Museum, as compiled by the AG, the following was stated:
“We commend the museum’s achievement of its fourth consecutive clean audit where no material misstatements or material findings on compliance and predetermined objectives were identified.
“Achieving and maintaining this standard over four consecutive audit cycles sets a commendable example of good governance and accountability with the public sector and demonstrates the value of strong leadership, an effective internal control environmen, and culture of continuous excellence.”
What makes this all the more noteworthy is that the museum is continuously expanding, creating new exhibition spaces and temporary exhibitions, and bringing out books and videos making the history of the Anglo Boer War accessible to old and new.
