Alleged US fugitive remains in custody pending extradition

GQEBERHA – The alleged American fugitive, Robert Lee Redd Junior (56), briefly appeared in the Gqeberha Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 3 August, where the matter was postponed to next week for the signing of extradition documents.

Redd will remain in custody while South African authorities continue with the extradition process.

PE Express previously reported that Redd is wanted in the United States on allegations of rape and sexual assault. During the brief court appearance, defence advocate Danie Gouws informed the court that he had received all the extradition documents relating to the matter.

Standing in the dock, Redd remained composed throughout the proceedings, leaning against the dock wall and not looking towards the public gallery while the case was being heard.

When asked about the status of the accused’s anticipated bail application, Gouws told the court that the bail application would not be proceeding in South Africa. He said he believed Redd would most likely be extradited to the United States before any local bail application could be heard.

PE Express also reported that South African Police Service (SAPS) spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said that the suspect was arrested at his home in Kabega Park.

“The suspect, a USA citizen, is wanted by Interpol on charges of rape and sexual assault reported by the victim’s mother to the San Antonio Police Department in 2017,” Van Wyk said.

Redd was arrested at his Kabega Park home on 27 May during a joint operation involving the US Marshals Service, Interpol, and SAPS, following a two-year investigation.

Police reports state that the United States citizen was wanted in terms of an Interpol notice on charges of rape and sexual assault.

The matter was postponed to 11 August, when the extradition documents are expected to be formally signed. Redd remains in custody pending his next court appearance.
