CAPE TOWN – Gugulethu police are investigating a murder and attempted murder following the fatal shooting of a security officer on the corner of Mjodo and Great Dutch street in KTC around 14:30 on Friday 30 January.

Const Ndakhe Gwala, Western Cape police spokesperson, said reports suggest the deceased and his colleague were escorting a client who was doing electrical maintenance in the area, when they were allegedly approached by five unknown suspects.

The suspects were apparently armed with rifles and handguns, and opened fire on the two security officers, fatally wounding one of them.  The second victim fled to nearby shacks for refuge.

“A firearm with 15 rounds of ammunition was stolen from the deceased. No arrest has been made at this stage and the investigation is ongoing,” said Gwala.

Resident who spoke to City Vision on condition of anonymity for fear of harassment said the security officers has been escorting a truck of workers who were apparently working on electrical infrastructure in the area.

The resident claimed there were actually three security officers who were escorting the truck, which is owned by a private company.

“One security guard was shot and killed, another security was shot and injured and the third security officer managed to escape unharmed,” the resident said. “It is alleged that a group of men carrying firearms shot the security officers… I don’t know if they took any firearm from the security,”

The local expressed concern that the City of Cape Town will resort to halting all service provision in KTC, due to fears of the safety of municipal and contracted workers, adding community members are devastated by the incident.
