DURBAN – Five murder suspects were killed today in the early morning hours during a shootout with police in Inanda, north of Durban.

Police were pursuing the suspects, who were wanted in connection with an attempted murder case involving a police officer during a shooting incident in November. They were also wanted for other cases of murder, attempted murder and house robberies.

According to police, the suspects had been causing mayhem in Inanda and surrounding areas.

The suspects had remained elusive following the shooting incident involving police officers, but on Thursday morning police received information about their whereabouts.

The shootout

The fatal shootout took place in Bester Area 10 in Inanda during the early hours of Thursday, 8 January.

Upon police arrival, the suspects began shooting at officers through the door of the house where they were hiding. Police returned fire to protect themselves and other people in the vicinity.

All five suspects were fatally wounded, whilst none of the police officers sustained injuries. Police recovered four firearms.
