The Steinkopf High School (SHS) in the Northern Cape celebrates its 80th anniversary this year – a milestone that reflects decades of perseverance, achievement, and community spirit.
Since its establishment in 1945, the school has grown from humble beginnings into a proud institution known not only for its academic achievements but also for excellence in sport and culture.
Over the decades, SHS has expanded and adapted. Classes were held in various buildings until the current premises were occupied in 1974, with an additional block added in 1987.
Today the school stands as a beacon of excellence and hope in the community.
Although the anniversary celebrations began in October 2023 with a glittering pre-launch gala, and the official launch of the festivities took place in March, the main festival takes place from 15 to 19 October.

Events include Mr and Miss SHS, the crowning of new stars of the school (15 October); Voice and Sound, top-class cultural performances (16 October); fun day for learners and a learners’ dance which is open to all learners, not only learners from SHS (17 October); the grand festival day, followed by an evening dance for adults (18 October); and closing celebrations with a thanksgiving service in the morning and a free open-air gospel show in the afternoon (19 October).
On 11 October, a dance for the older generation with Real Beats takes place, and on 20 September a high tea event, specially for women.
All events will include stalls, with further details to be shared through the school’s media platforms.
Alumni and friends of the school are encouraged to purchase a special 80-year commemorative T-shirt or mug as keepsakes of this historic occasion.
Alumni, parents, and community members are warmly invited to join in this milestone celebration.
