42 Illegal immigrants arrested in Diepsloot

JOHANNESBURG – A total of 42 illegal immigrants were arrested during the multidisciplinary Operation Shanela II conducted in Diepsloot on Saturday 27 June.

Police also arrested more than 13 other suspects for offences including driving under the influence of alcohol, and selling liquor without valid licences, according to a press release by the South African Police Service.

As part of the operation, authorities closed six liquor outlets found to be operating without valid licences. Police also seized a vehicle with a tampered engine number, which will be subject to further investigation.

The operation was led by Brigadier Kubendran Govender, Gauteng Provincial Head for Police Emergency Services (PES), and Brigadier Levy Tsheko Lesego Mere, Provincial Head for Operational Response Services (ORS).

Operation Shanela II involved a range of crime-prevention activities, including roadblocks, stop-and-search operations, vehicle checkpoints and raids on liquor outlets aimed at combating crime and enforcing compliance with the law.

Police said the operation forms part of ongoing efforts to address crime, illegal immigration and other criminal activities across Gauteng.
