Continuous smouldering at the landfill site in Zolani, Ashton, was a challenge for the Langeberg Fire Services this week.
The site has continued to smoulder and release smoke into the air. The issue, according to the municipality, is the nature of the materials in the landfill, some of which are flammable and can re-ignite and produce smoke persistently.
“Our teams, including assistance from Cape Winelands Fire Service from time to time, have been monitoring the situation closely,” it said in a statement, “and have responded on several occasions to suppress visible flames and hotspots.
“We are working in collaboration with the other municipal departments to implement both short-term and long-term measures to minimise the impact.”
These include regular inspections and suppression of hotspots, application of fire control methods and engagement with the waste management department.
“We acknowledge the discomfort and health concerns that the smoke may cause for nearby residents, especially those with respiratory conditions.”
The municipality advised residents to limit their time outdoor when smoke levels are high and to keep windows and doors closed. They should seek medical attention if they experience breathing difficulties.
“The safety and well-being of our community remain our top priority. We assure residents that all possible steps are being taken to manage the situation and reduce smoke emissions.”
