WORCESTER: The Breede Valley Municipality’s Executive Mayor’s Recognition Gala, held at the Worcester Town Hall on 23 September, celebrated the academic achievements of municipal employees and the Municipality’s commitment to investing in its people.

Held under the theme “True Development is the Development of People,” the event recognised employees who have pursued further education and skills development through dedication, perseverance and hard work.

Director Raymond Esau shared the story behind the Municipality’s bursary initiative and how it developed into opportunities for employees to pursue formal qualifications.

A significant part of this journey was the Municipality’s collaboration with Regent Business School, one of the first tertiary institutions to show a willingness to partner in expanding access to further education for municipal employees.

Through this collaboration, Regent Business School brought its academic programmes closer to employees by presenting classes at Boland College in Worcester, making it more accessible for employees to study while continuing with their municipal responsibilities.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr Shahiem Patel, Academic Dean at Regent Business School, who encouraged attendees to “never stop learning” and highlighted the importance of lifelong learning in personal and professional development. His presence also reflected the significance of the partnership between Regent Business School and the Municipality in creating opportunities for employees to further their education.

Western Cape Provincial Minister of Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning, Anton Bredell, also attended the event and highlighted the importance of initiatives that invest in people and skills, particularly for the country’s economy.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Anroux Marais, was also in attendance, alongside municipal and other stakeholders.

Executive Mayor Alderman Antoinette Steyn was also presented with an award in recognition of her leadership and service.
