The Western Cape government has issued an urgent call for residents to prepare for severe weather conditions expected to hit the province on Thursday, 3 September and Friday, 4 September.

Anton Bredell, Western Cape minister for local government, environmental affairs and development planning, warned residents to exercise caution following a Joint Operations Committee meeting at the provincial disaster management centre on Tuesday.

The South African Weather Service briefed the committee on predicted adverse weather and issued a level four warning for disruptive rainfall across parts of the province. The Overberg and Garden Route districts are expected to bear the brunt of the conditions, with rainfall accumulations between 30 mm and 45 mm forecast.

Strong winds are anticipated over parts of the Central Karoo, Little Karoo and Cape Winelands, whilst hazardous sea conditions and high waves are expected along much of the coastline.

Provincial disaster management centre officials are monitoring the situation closely and remain in continuous contact with the weather service to assess any changes in the forecast.

Residents have been encouraged to avoid crossing flooded roads, bridges and low-water crossings, and to stay away from rivers, streams and stormwater channels during heavy rainfall. The government has also advised people to secure loose outdoor items that may be affected by strong winds and to exercise caution near the coastline where rough seas and high waves are expected.

Bredell said the provincial government remains in close contact with municipalities and emergency response agencies to ensure readiness should conditions deteriorate.

As weather systems can change rapidly, residents are urged to remain alert and monitor official communication channels for further updates from the Western Cape government, local municipalities and the South African Weather Service.
