SALDANHA – The Saldanha Drags exceeded expectations this year, attracting around 5 800 spectators to the Saldanha airfield for a day of high-speed racing and entertainment.
According to Lawton van Oordt of West Coast Racing, organisers had prepared for about 5 000 patrons, but the turnout was significantly higher.
He described the atmosphere as “electric”, from the popular Parade Lap through to the final race of the day.
The event attracted 160 racers, with competitors bringing their best to the track and setting impressive personal bests.
One of the standout performances came from a fully modified BMW G80, which reached a record speed of 322.09 km/h.
The motorcycles were amazing with the fastest two-wheel machines reaching 325 km/h.
Local competitors also put in strong performances in Class 4A.
Sulayman Rodgers, driving a Nissan STI, broke the 200 km/h mark, while Jaswin Slingers reached 182.57 km/h in his Honda Ballade. Peter-Hein Lottering, behind the wheel of a Toyota Corolla, recorded 169.39 km/h.
“The crowd support and attendance was a highlight on its own. The competitors came with their A-game and entertained the crowd, with personal best records being shattered,” Van Oordt said.
He added that favourable weather conditions also contributed to a successful day of racing.
Beyond the excitement on the track, van Oordt said the event makes an important contribution to the local economy and tourism industry.
“Retail and accommodation is always well supported by our patrons who book accommodation across all towns, supporting restaurants and shops alike,” he said.
Keeping the event affordable for families remains a challenge, with rising costs, including fuel, putting pressure on ticket prices. Sponsors have helped organisers keep costs down and make it possible for visitors to attend.
Looking ahead, they plan improve the layout and management of parking and overnight camping.
“We need to focus on parking and structuring the overnight camping more efficiently as these contribute to congestion on the airfield,” van Oordt said.
