LANGEBAAN – It was a great honour for Ingrid Petersen to launch her second book, named “The Red Pen”.

The launch took place at the Langebaan Yacht Club on Saturday 5 September.

The launch marks another milestone in Petersen’s writing journey, following her first book, “Through My Eyes”, which told the deeply personal story of her daughter’s cancer journey through the eyes of a mother.

While her first book was based on her family’s own experience, “The Red Pen” explores rejection, difficult family relationships, resilience and the choices people make when life does not give them the beginning they might have wished for.

The story follows Lilly, a young girl who grows up facing rejection and challenging circumstances within her own family.

As she gets older, she must deal with experiences that shape how she sees herself, her family and the world around her.

Although the story tackles difficult themes, Petersen says the book is ultimately about hope, faith, education, self-worth, perseverance and the ability to change the direction of one’s life.“The past may shape us, but it does not have to define our future,” she says.

The title “The Red Pen” reflects this message. Just as a red pen can be used to correct what has been written, Petersen believes people can make changes, choose a different direction, and, in a sense, rewrite what comes next in their lives.

She hopes readers will finish the book with a renewed sense of hope and understand that where they come from does not necessarily determine where they are going.

She also hopes the story will remind readers of the lasting impact that words and actions can have, particularly on children. “Writing has become part of my journey,” she said.

Her message to aspiring local writers is simple: start writing. “Don’t wait until you think you are good enough. Don’t wait for the perfect time, because there will probably never be a perfect time.”

For Petersen, the red pen represents the possibility of change and is a reminder that while people cannot rewrite their past, they can still have a say in what comes next.
