SALDANHA – A delegation from the Consulate General of Indonesia visited Saldanha on Friday 18 September to strengthen ties and explore potential investment and economic opportunities between Indonesia and the West Coast.
The engagement, facilitated by the West Coast Business Chamber, was held at the Hoedjiesbaai Hotel and brought together representatives interested in strengthening ties with Indonesia.
A key focus of the discussions was developing trust and friendship while identifying areas where both Indonesia and the Saldanha Bay area could benefit from closer cooperation.
Marius Koen, Mayor of the Saldanha Bay Municipality, highlighted tourism as another area where local roleplayers could learn from Indonesia’s experience.
He said there are many investment opportunities in the Saldanha Bay area and stressed the importance of developing the area into a stronger economic hub.
Mr Tudiono*, the Consul General of Indonesia, also shared more about what their country has achieved and looks forward to exploring the various opportunities discussed.
The discussions also focused on stimulating the local economy and creating opportunities through collaboration between businesses and stakeholders from Indonesia and Saldanha Bay.
The sentiment was that cooperation should be based on a give-and-take, symbiotic relationship, with initiatives creating benefits for both Indonesian interests and the Saldanha community.
Participants emphasised the importance of maintaining contact following the visit and continuing discussions to turn potential opportunities into practical projects.
The meeting concluded with acknowledgement that there are many more discussions and opportunities to explore, with both sides encouraged to continue building the relationship.
André Truter, representative of the Phelan Group, also shared more about the group’s work and spoke about the potential benefits of green energy.
Gary Bardenhorst, Chairperson of the West Coast Business Chamber, said working together would be a major boost for the region. “I only see positive things coming from it.”
Bardenhorst thanked the delegation and all those who attended for their participation and contribution to the engagement.
