First Full Moon Hike success

What began as an idea inspired by a hike at Meerendal became a memorable evening of community spirit in Langebaan.

On Saturday 24 October, more than 300 people gathered for the town’s inaugural Shark Bay Full Moon Hike, raising funds for Langebaan Animal Care.

According to Franciska Meiring, the idea stemmed from their love for the outdoors and a desire to create something unique that would bring the Langebaan community together. “We never imagined the response would be so incredible. It became about hiking as well as community spirit, nature and making a difference together. The community also showed tremendous generosity by donating pet food, blankets and other essential supplies for animals in need.

The donations were so substantial that we ran out of space to accommodate all the items, with contributions eventually filling two bakkies,” Meiring added.

One of the highlights was seeing so many people come together for a shared experience while supporting a worthy cause. “The atmosphere was fantastic, with so much excitement and community spirit. It was about hiking as well as about making a difference together,” she said. Safety and careful planning were priorities, particularly given the large turnout and the fact that the hike took place at night. The organisers monitored the weather and carefully considered the route. They also received support from Parkrun and the Animal Welfare staff, who assisted as marshals along the way.

“Feedback from participants, both at the event and on social media, was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing interest in attending future hikes.

“The next full moon hike has already been confirmed for Saturday 28 November.

The organisers hope to continue the initiative, bringing people together through a love of the outdoors while supporting community causes.
