LANGEBAAN – The inaugural Stiles Legends Pickleball Series concluded at Club Mykonos on Saturday 19 September, with Jacques and Santie Blom of Team Flowers claiming the title after a day of competitive matches on Courts 1 and 2.

The tournament featured eight mixed teams totalling 16 players who battled through position playoffs, with the top four teams advancing to the semi-finals. Matches were played as best-of-five sets, with a 3-0 or 4-1 result ending a match.

In the position 1-4 semi-finals, Dashing Rebels faced Staan & Slaan, while Flowers took on Heavy Dinkers. The position 5-8 semi-finals saw Philleighn Great play Volley Vipers, and Double Trouble face Stryders.

The matches were played as best-of-five sets, with a 3-0 or 4-1 result ending a match. The day culminated in the grand final for positions 1 and 2.

When the paddles finally settled, Jacques and Santie Blom of Team Flowers emerged as the winners of the Stiles Legends Pickleball Series.

The series combined competitive pickleball with plenty of camaraderie, living up to its motto “Legends Never Quit.”

Pickleball growing in West Coast

The series was organised by Inspire Wellness and sponsored by Stiles, with Club Mykonos serving as the venue, tournament organiser Rochelle Becker, clarified.

The pickleball courts at Club Mykonos opened on 9 December 2024, during Becker’s tenure at the resort. However, she left their employment at the end of March to establish Inspire Wellness and has since focused on growing the sport independently.

The growth has become increasingly community-driven, according to Becker. “The community itself is growing the sport too; the likes of lawyer Richard Phillips, Louis-Ras and Jacques, they absolutely love it and created a Men’s group too amongst themselves,” she said.

A WhatsApp group called Pickle Pals has been established as a platform for community engagement and sport development. Becker credits this grassroots approach for sustaining interest in pickleball in the region.

When asked about plans for future tournaments, Becker confirmed that Inspire Wellness is planning to host more leagues and tournaments at its Club Mykonos venue, which remains the only dedicated pickleball facility in the area.

The Stiles Legends Pickleball Series lived up to its motto “Legends Never Quit,” combining competitive play with camaraderie among participants. The success of the inaugural event suggests a growing appetite for organised pickleball competition in the West Coast region.
