Fifty-four points. One absolute rollercoaster. Welkom Gimnasium conjured a remarkable second-half resurrection to overhaul Nico Malan 54-43 in a Noord Suid Day Two classic that had the crowd on their feet from first whistle to last. This wasn’t just a rugby match, it was pure theatre.
Nico Malan stamped their authority within minutes. A cleverly executed maul try, complete with a well-timed change of contact point, bamboozled the Welkom defence. The men from Humansdorp led 7-0 before some spectators had settled into their seats.
But Welkom Gim possess plenty of firepower. From an attacking scrum deep in Nico Malan’s 22, flanker Emile Mahlelebe packed down at number eight and demonstrated precisely why coaches love versatile loose forwards. The powerful forward picked up from the base and combined pace with power to crash over. Seven-all, game on.
The response from Nico Malan proved immediate and clinical. After stringing together multiple phases, scrumhalf Lleyton Minnie read the ruck defence like a book, spotted acres of space and sniped over unopposed. Welkom had made it far too easy for the Humansdorp attack.
Nico Malan stretched their advantage to 21-7, seemingly grabbing control of proceedings.
With 16 minutes remaining in the half, Welkom Gim earned a penalty and Mahlelebe grabbed his second, cutting the deficit to 21-14. The visitors weren’t done yet.
Ten minutes before the break, Welkom scrumhalf Ruchen Daniels orchestrated a moment of magic. Playing the blindside from a scrum, Daniels fed Tumelo Masukela, who launched a perfectly weighted grubber. Daniels backed his pace, won the foot race by a country mile and dotted down for a superb individual try. Twenty-one apiece at the half-hour mark – this match had everything.
But Nico Malan weren’t ready to surrender momentum. A crucial turnover sparked a coast-to-coast counter that restored their lead at 26-21. Further scores pushed the halftime advantage to 33-21, giving the men from Humansdorp breathing room heading into the sheds.
Welkom Gim emerged with renewed purpose after the interval. They chipped away at the deficit, reducing it first to 33-28, then 38-28 as Nico Malan extended their lead once more.
The 51st minute brought crisp service from Daniels, providing lightning-quick ball that allowed Welkom to shift it wide. Masukela received in space and burned the defence to cross the whitewash. Suddenly, 38-33, Welkom were fighting their way back into this thriller.
The dramatic final third
Welkom Gim found another gear when it mattered most. A high tackle gifted them a penalty try, dragging them to within two points at 40-38. The momentum had completely shifted.
Vusi Ndayi struck next, finishing superbly out wide to push Welkom ahead 45-38. The comeback was gathering unstoppable force.
Ave Schalk countered brilliantly, penetrating into the 22 before Mahlelebe powered over for his third try. With four minutes remaining, Welkom led 47-38 and Nico Malan’s resistance was crumbling.
The knockout blow came from deep inside Welkom’s own half. From a scrum, the ball went through the hands before reaching Schalk. When Nico Malan slipped a crucial tackle, there was no substitute for pace. Schalk burned up the pitch, leaving defenders grasping at air, to score a sensational long-range try. 54 to 38.
Nico Malan grabbed a consolation score as the final siren sounded, but this victory belonged emphatically to Welkom Gimnasium.
From 33-21 down at halftime to a 54-43 victory. Mahlelebe’s hat-trick, Daniels’ orchestration and Schalk’s pace proved the difference.
Noord Suid continues to deliver absolute gold.
