The Rooibulle held their nerve in a heart-stopping finish to edge Nico Malan 31-28

When the final whistle pierced through the tension during the opening Day 4 match at Noord Suid, it wasn’t the scoreboard that told the story, it was the sheer exhaustion etched on every face. HTS Middelburg had just survived a coast-to-coast final assault, holding up a desperate Nico Malan maul over the line to seal a 31-28 victory.

This was a proper slugfest between two sides who refused to yield an inch.

Fast start, furious response

The Rooibulle announced their intentions from the opening whistle, attacking with real venom. Their game plan was clear: soften up the Nico Malan pack with phase play through the forwards, then spread the ball wide and let the backs do the damage.

It took just six minutes for the strategy to bear fruit. After several phases of hard carrying, the ball found space out wide where Regard Blake had the pace and poise to dot down in the corner. The conversion sailed through, and HTS Middelburg led 7-0.

But Nico Malan aren’t a side that panic easily. The boys from Humansdorp applied suffocating defensive pressure, forcing turnovers and looking to strike on the counter. In the 17th minute, they found exactly what they were hunting for.

A turnover in midfield sparked the counter-attack. Nico Malan kept the ball alive through multiple phases, working it wide and showing patience in possession before Masood Knowlden finished the movement under the sticks. The conversion was a formality, and scores were level at 7-7.

The offload game

What followed in the 20th minute was a masterclass in support play. Nico Malan opted for a quick tap penalty, and Janu Janse van Rensburg showed brilliant game intelligence. He held the ball just long enough to fix the defence before releasing Callie De Lange on a devastating inside line.

The plus pass sent De Lange slicing through the HTS Middelburg line. Conversion successful, Nico Malan led 14-7.

It’s clear the Humansdorp coaching staff have invested serious hours on the training ground perfecting the offload game, and it was paying dividends.

Big men, soft hands

With four minutes remaining in the first stanza, HTS Middelburg’s monster lock Ruben Kruger reminded everyone that big men can have silky skills too.

The second-row forward sold an outrageous dummy that the Nico Malan defence bought completely. Once they’d bitten, Kruger powered his way to the line with the kind of determination you’d expect from a forward who’d just embarrassed the opposition. The scores were locked at 14-14.

But Nico Malan weren’t done. On the stroke of half-time, that offload game struck again. Callie De Lange, increasingly influential, threw a perfectly timed plus pass to Sima Ozah, who had the simplest of finishes. The conversion put Nico Malan 21-14 up at the break.

Second-half stalemate

If the first half was about attacking flair, the second was pure attritional rugby. HTS Middelburg’s powerful inside centre Nathan Jansen Van Vuuren found a half-space in the 44th minute and couldn’t be stopped, crashing over to level proceedings at 21-21.

Then came the deadlock. For 20 brutal minutes, neither side could break through. Defences dominated, turnovers mounted, and the scoreboard remained static.

In the 56th minute, the Rooibulle finally cracked the code. They kept the ball alive through multiple phases before outside centre Jacques Greyling spotted space and glided through to score. The conversion made it 28-21.

Final fireworks

With eight minutes on the clock, Nico Malan showed why their driving maul has become such a weapon. They set it, drove it, and showed remarkable patience to grind their way over the line. The conversion was good, and we were all square at 28-28.

Four minutes remaining. Penalty to HTS Middelburg. Not an easy kick by any stretch, but Cornelius Erasmus showed ice-cold composure. The ball sailed through the posts, and the Rooibulle led 31-28.

The siren sounded with Nico Malan launching one final, desperate attack. Coast-to-coast rugby, the ball going through hands as they searched for the match-winner.

HTS Middelburg’s defence held firm, but an offside penalty gave Nico Malan one last chance. They set the maul, driving with everything they had left in the tank.

But the Rooibulle were up for it. In the defining moment of the match, they held Nico Malan up over the line. Victory. Bedlam.
