The roar from the Noord Suid stands told the story, rugby doesn’t get much tighter than this. HTS Middelburg and Trio served up a pulsating 80-minute arm wrestle that swung like a pendulum before the men from Kroonstad snatched a heart-stopping 27-25 victory on Day Two of the prestigious tournament.
After Day One’s fireworks, expectations were sky-high. This clash delivered in spades.
The opening 40 minutes played out like a chess match between two evenly-matched heavyweights. Defence dominated proceedings as both sides measured each other up, testing the gainline without finding clear answers. The physicality was fierce, the execution tidy, but breakthrough moments proved elusive.
The scoreboard reflected the brutal arm wrestle, just a solitary point separated the sides at the break, with the Rooibulle edging it 7-6. Everything remained to play for.
HTS Middelburg emerged with intent after the interval. Five minutes into the second stanza, the hosts pushed ahead 11-10, sensing their opportunity to grab this contest by the scruff of the neck.
The 51st minute brought the breakthrough the home faithful craved. The Rooibulle applied sustained pressure inside Trio’s 22, securing quality lineout ball before stringing together multiple phases. Scrumhalf Dante Lubbe read the defence perfectly, spotted the gap and darted over from close range.
But Trio refused to buckle. Champions find answers when the pressure mounts, and the visitors demonstrated precisely that quality.
Minutes after Lubbe’s score, Trio attacked with purpose and found precious space out wide. Jaylin Jones exploited the gap brilliantly, diving over to drag his side back into the contest at 18-15.
The momentum had shifted dramatically. Mere minutes later, Trio launched a coast-to-coast raid that epitomised their counter-attacking prowess. Teagan Jantjies finished superbly to haul Trio into the lead at 22-18. The script had been torn up.
The killer blow
HTS Middelburg’s frustration boiled over as yellow card materialized with 10 minutes remaining. Down to 14 men and trailing on the scoreboard, the Rooibulle faced a mountain to climb.
Jantjies sensed blood. The flyer found space on the edge once more, slicing through tired defenders to claim his second try and extend Trio’s advantage to 27-18. The game appeared beyond Middelburg’s reach.
Trio turned on the style during the closing stages, but the Rooibulle refused to die wondering. A late resurgence saw the men from Middelburg march upfield with renewed purpose, eventually crossing from a penalty to cut the deficit to two points at 27-25.
The final whistle sounded moments later, sparking jubilant scenes among the Trio contingent. They’d weathered the storm, turned the tables and emerged victorious from an absolute arm wrestle.
