Four teams remain as NWU School Sport Series heats up

Waterkloof face Nelspruit while Menlopark tackle Oos Moot as the race for top honours reaches fever pitch at Transvalia and HTS Middelburg.

The NWU school sport series has reached its defining moment. Four heavyweights remain standing, each harbouring legitimate ambitions of lifting silverware when the dust settles. Semi-final weekend promises brutal collisions and championship-defining performances.

Waterkloof’s freshness vs Nelspruit’s match sharpness

This semi-final clash between two dangerous outfits could swing on contrasting preparation philosophies. Waterkloof enjoyed a solid holiday circuit at Noord Suid, coming agonisingly close to toppling top 10 candidates Outeniqua before settling for a draw in a match they dominated on most fronts. They were in top form as they crushed Diamantveld earlier in the tournament. Those hard-earned lessons won’t be forgotten.

Coach Cobus van Dyk made the calculated decision to give his charges time off after Noord Suid rather than slog through an Easter festival – a gamble that could pay huge dividends.

“In a semi-final the competition starts from scratch. I’m glad we gave the boys some time off after Noord Suid. Just to rest their bodies a bit, take care of some niggles. It was important for us not to play at an Easter festival. Nelspruit played which might make them a little bit more tired. We want to focus on the momentum we have built at Noord Suid. Nelspruit will come out with everything they have, they have good coaches, it is going to be massive match, which we are looking forward to,” van Dyk said.

The return of captain Meyer Pretorius from concussion provides a timely boost for the Pretoria outfit. His leadership and on-field nous could prove crucial in the cauldron of knockout rugby.

Nelspruit, meanwhile, endured a gruelling schedule at Noord Suid and the St Johns Easter festival. They swept aside all challengers at Noord Suid before Hilton administered a brutal 65-14 hiding – only to bounce back immediately with victory over St Albans. That resilience speaks volumes about their mental fortitude.

Fullback Rhandzu Mkhabela looms as Nelspruit’s X-factor. The powerful, pacey custodian possesses the game-breaking ability to punish any defensive lapses from Waterkloof. One moment of brilliance could swing this heavyweight bout.

Capital clash: Menlopark vs Oos Moot

Two competitive Pretoria outfits will duke it out at Transvalia in Vanderbijlpark for a place in the final. Menlopark impressed in patches at Noord Suid, dismantling Boland Landbou before Paarl Gimnasium, who look the absolute business, blew them off the park.

Danie Botma rediscovered his mojo at Noord Suid and will carry that confidence into the semi-final. The fitness of Dylan Stumpke remains the burning question after an injury forced him from the field at Noord Suid. His availability could significantly impact Menlopark’s game plan.

Oos Moot arrive battle-hardened but battered. Head of sport Braam Pretorius acknowledged his troops are nursing several Noord Suid knocks but remains bullish about their prospects.

“It’s going to be a tough match, we have some injuries that we picked up at Noord Suid. I believe it is going to be a high tempo game. Menlopark will probably give the ball some air against us. If we can match their tempo it will be competitive. We have our plans for the weekend, it is always nice to measure yourselves against someone like Menlopark, we are looking forward to it,” Pretorius said.

The Oos Moot mentor expects Menlopark to unleash an expansive attacking approach. If his side can match that intensity and tempo, this semi-final could go down to the wire.

Battles for pride across the draw

The beauty of the NWU school sport series lies in its structure, every team competes right through to finals weekend for their respective finishing positions.

The race for positions 5-8 features HTS Middelburg taking on EG Jansen, whilst Middelburg face Ben Vorster. Meanwhile, positions 9-12 will be contested by Eldoraigne tackling hosts Transvalia and Kemptonpark squaring off against Piet Retief.

Four teams remain. Two will advance to contest ultimate glory.
