The Parisians silenced Anfield hopes while Barcelona’s European dream hangs by a thread after a calamitous night in Madrid
The UEFA Champions League quarter-finals delivered drama, controversy, and clinical finishing as defending champions Paris Saint-Germain dismantled Liverpool 2-0, whilst Atletico Madrid capitalised on Barcelona’s red card misery to claim an identical scoreline at the Metropolitano.
PSG prove too strong for Reds’ reshuffled attack
Arne Slot’s decision to axe Mohamed Salah following Liverpool’s FA Cup capitulation against Manchester City raised eyebrows, but the gamble backfired spectacularly as the Reds were outclassed by Luis Enrique’s ruthless Parisians.
The Dutch tactician handed starts to Jeremie Frimpong and former PSG striker Hugo Ekitike in a reshuffled front line, but the visitors struggled to impose themselves from the first whistle. PSG broke the deadlock in the 11th minute when Désiré Doué’s deflected strike looped agonisingly over Giorgi Mamardashvili, giving the Georgian goalkeeper no chance.
Mamardashvili endured a torrid opening 45 minutes, producing a crucial block to deny Doué in a one-on-one situation that would have surely killed the tie. The Reds shot-stopper kept his side in the contest until the 65th minute, when Khvicha Kvaratskhelia collected Joao Neves’ incisive pass before rounding Mamardashvili and slotting into an empty net.
The French champions now head to Anfield with a commanding two-goal cushion, leaving Liverpool needing a special European night on Merseyside to keep their Champions League hopes alive.
Ten-man Barcelona crumble as Atletico smell blood
Hansi Flick’s Barcelona endured a nightmare at the Metropolitano as Pau Cubarsi’s 44th-minute red card swung the tie firmly in Atletico Madrid’s favour.
The Blaugrana boss had recalled Robert Lewandowski after his weekend heroics against Atletico in LALIGA, with Dani Olmo and Jules Kounde also coming into the starting XI for Fermin Lopez and Ronald Araujo. However, the tactical tweaks counted for nothing when Cubarsi hauled down Giuliano Simeone as the last man, leaving referee to brandish a straight red card on the stroke of half-time.
Atletico capitalised immediately as Julian Alvarez stepped up to curl a sublime free-kick beyond the despairing dive of Joan Garcia, sending the home faithful into raptures. Flick responded with a double substitution at the interval, withdrawing Lewandowski and Pedri for Fermin and Gavi in a desperate attempt to stem the tide.

The numerical disadvantage proved insurmountable. Matteo Ruggeri’s pinpoint delivery found Alexander Sorloth in the 71st minute, with the Norwegian striker firing home from close range to double Atletico’s advantage. Barcelona now face an almighty task to overturn the deficit at Camp Nou, with Atletico holding all the cards ahead of next week’s second leg.
Both ties remain alive, but PSG and Atletico have one foot firmly planted in the semi-finals after comprehensive first-leg victories.
