In the news making headlines today police are following a promising lead after gunmen killed 11 people, including a pregnant woman, in KwaMakhutha township south of Durban last night. The victims were gathered at a house around 11pm when armed assailants opened fire. Three survived. Acting police chief Puleng Dimpane has activated a 72-hour tracking operation to find those responsible.

In other news, your medical aid could cost you a lot more next year. The regulator says contributions should rise by about 3.8%, but experts warn the real increase could be nearly double – between 5.8 and 7.3%. The Board of Healthcare Funders says the official number does not reflect the true cost of healthcare.

And a South African film is making waves overseas. The documentary SPOILED won the top sustainability prize at the Terres Travel Festival in Spain last week. It profiles coastal communities, fishers and activists standing up to oil and gas giants along South Africa’s coastline, where roughly 90 percent of ocean territory is under threat.
