In a significant milestone for Viljoenskroon’s newest martial arts institution, the Free State Black Belt Academy has successfully conducted its first grading for Tang Soo Do students, showcasing impressive progress just months after opening its doors in January.
The grading, where technical assessment was done, took place on 30 July.
The club − led by Matthew Caisley and his sons, Nicholas and Christopher − introduces the community to Tang Soo Do: a dynamic Korean martial art that blends techniques from karate, taekkyeon, subak and northern Chinese martial arts. The discipline offers a comprehensive approach to self-defense and personal development.
The Free State Black Belt Academy offers specialised classes catering to various age groups, starting with the Little Tigers (ages four to five). Junior classes are offered, as well as classes for teenagers, training for adults, and women’s self-defense classes.

“Our goal is to create a supportive environment where students can learn discipline, build confidence, and develop practical self-defense skills,” says Matthew, as chief instructor.
The club at 11 Theron Street, Viljoenskroon, welcomes new members on Mondays and Wednesdays from 17:30 to 20:30.
Interested individuals can contact Matthew on 082 772 8061 for information.
