Two men were arrested and dagga with an estimated street value of R150 000 was seized during a police operation in Kroonstad this week.
The arrests followed reports of a suspicious vehicle parked near the Kroonstad Small Holdings area on Wednesday morning 6 May. Members of the South African Police Service in Kroonstad were dispatched to investigate after the information was received by the local Client Service Centre at around 10:30.
Police reportedly found a white Toyota parked on the property and were approached by two men who claimed they were known to the owner and were waiting for him to finish a meeting. Officers became suspicious and contacted the property owner directly to verify the explanation.
According to police, the owner denied knowing either of the men and said he had not given anyone permission to be on the property. As officers moved closer to inspect the vehicle, the two suspects allegedly attempted to flee on foot.
A short chase followed before the men (29 and 30) were apprehended by police officers. A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered several compressed bags of dagga believed to have a street value of about R150 000.
The two suspects have been charged with dealing in and illegal possession of dagga and are expected to appear in the Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court soon.
