A total of 230 learners at Boiphihlelo Secondary School in Vredefort attended a school safety awareness campaign on Tuesday 15 September.

The campaign focused on teenage pregnancy, children in conflict with the law and statutory rape.

The topics were prioritised because they relate to cases currently under investigation involving learners from the school, said Sgt. Josephine Rani, corporate communication and liaison officer for the Free State police.

Vredefort South African Police Service (SAPS) conducted the campaign in collaboration with several stakeholders, including the Community Policing Officer, Tumahole Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit, Community Policing Forum, Youth Desk, Department of Health and Department of Education.

Learners in grades eight to 10 participated in the awareness programme, where they were informed about the legal and social consequences surrounding the issues discussed.

The campaign formed part of ongoing efforts by police and their partners to promote safer schools and equip learners with information that can help them make informed decisions and understand their rights and responsibilities.
