Police have launched a manhunt following a shooting on the R26 between Tweeling and Reitz in the Free State that left four people dead and one person critically injured.
The incident occurred earlier this week when occupants of a white Honda Fit/Jazz were allegedly ambushed by armed assailants travelling in a green Mercedes-Benz and a white Honda with Kingdom of Lesotho registration plates.
According to police reports, the suspects opened fire on the vehicle, fatally wounding three men and one woman at the scene. A fifth victim sustained critical injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency medical treatment.
The attack led to the temporary closure of the R26 as law enforcement officials, emergency personnel and forensic experts attended the scene. The road has since reopened, although police investigators remain in the area gathering evidence.
Motorists travelling through the region were diverted to alternative routes, with traffic from Bethlehem and QwaQwa redirected via Petrus Steyn, while travellers from Gauteng heading towards Bethlehem and QwaQwa were advised to use the N3.
Police crime scene experts are continuing with investigations. No arrests have been made.
Police are appealing to members of the public to come forward with any information that could assist the investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident, seen the vehicles involved, or has information regarding the whereabouts of the suspects is urged to contact 082 466 8530. Anonymous tip-offs can also be submitted via the MySAPS App, the SAPS Crime Stop number, or at any police station.
