Police and community leaders gathered in Zamdela this week in a renewed effort to tackle crime and strengthen ties with residents.

The meeting, held on Tuesday 14 April near the Dipereng informal settlement in Amelia, brought together members of the Zamdela Social Crime Prevention unit; the community policing forum (CPF); the Zamdela Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) unit; as well as corporate communication and liaison officials; and Community in Blue representatives.

The session focused on improving cooperation between police and the public, while addressing key crime concerns affecting the area. Among the issues highlighted were incidents of rape, domestic violence, and housebreaking and theft.

Residents were urged to report all criminal activity promptly and to work closely with the police to help improve safety in their community. Officers stressed the importance of early reporting, supporting victims, and sharing information that could assist ongoing investigations.

Police also used the opportunity to inform attendees about the “Rate my Service” platform, which allows members of the public to provide feedback on police services. In addition, services available to elderly residents and people living with disabilities were outlined.

Practical guidance was provided on applying for firearm licences and obtaining police clearance certificates, with the aim of making SAPS processes more accessible and better understood by the community.

The meeting was closed by the CPF, calling on residents to unite with police in the fight against crime, emphasising that cooperation remains key to creating a safer environment for all.
