A routine day on a Harrismith farm turned violent when three men allegedly broke into a farmhouse, stole equipment, and assaulted the property owner. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday morning 3 February has reignited concerns over the safety of farmers and farmworkers in rural communities.
According to authorities, the farmer had briefly left his property to fetch an employee. Upon returning, he discovered that two laptops had been taken from the farm office.
A chase ensued when the employee reported seeing three men fleeing across the fields. During the confrontation, the farmer was allegedly struck on the head with a stone, sustaining an open wound.
Private security officers quickly responded, recovering the stolen laptops and apprehending all three suspects, who are now facing charges of housebreaking, theft, and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They are expected to appear in the Harrismith Magistrate’s Court today.
