WELKOM – Two young equestrians from Belinda’s Horseriding School (BRS) are celebrating a milestone after making their mark at the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) Rising Star Championships.
Siblings Hlompho and Atile Mohlatsane have turned their passion for horse riding into promising sporting careers, producing impressive performances at the national championships.
Hlompho claimed first place in the 10-and-Above Intro Equitation category, riding BRS Mango No 5. She also had a string of first and second place finishes in her jumping classes.
Her younger brother Atile competed in the U10 Jumping category on BRS Luna Love Good, also receiving prizes at the prize-giving ceremony.
The siblings began riding at BRS in July 2025, with Atile initially introduced to the sport through equitherapy. According to the family it has helped Atile develop skills such as hand-eye concentration, time management and balance, while giving him the opportunity to be outdoors with horses. His confidence grew quickly, and even more so after taking part in a training show at BRS and winning a rosette and medal.

Siblings at their best
“His competing career started there. It was always his best when he could beat his sister,” coach Shaylene Basson said.
Hlompho was inspired by seeing how much her brother enjoyed riding and decided she wanted to join him.
She has worked hard under the guidance of her coach, with the pair developing a strong understanding and working relationship. Hlompho has now acquired her own horse and is preparing to begin competing off lead. Parents Joseph and Monstheng Mohlatsane have played an important role in helping the children pursue their passion for equestrian.
Grandad Selebalo Mohlatsane has learned to tow the horsebox, enabling the family to transport the horses to competitions. Grandad and his wife, Mohanua Molope, take Hlompho and Atile to their riding lessons, and equitherapy sessions twice a week.
With their riding journey that began just over a year ago, Hlompho is preparing to compete independently and Atile continues to develop his skills.
