Two Matjhabeng security officers have appeared in the Virginia Magistrates’ Court on charges of corruption and extortion following their arrest in Meloding.

Daniel Tshetu (44) and Lekitlane Patrick Linoko (42) appeared in court on Wednesday 22 July, after they were arrested a day prior in connection with an alleged extortion incident.

According to information before the court, the two officers allegedly conducted an unauthorised compliance inspection at a tuckshop in Zone 14, Meloding. During the inspection, they are accused of demanding money from the owner.

The incident was reportedly brought to the attention of their supervisor, who alerted the police.

A case was subsequently registered at the Meloding Police Station, leading to the arrest of the two suspects shortly after the alleged incident.

Following their court appearance, Tshetu and Linoko were each granted bail of R1 000.

The case has been postponed to Tuesday 18 August for further police investigation.
