MELODING – An intelligence-driven police operation has led to the arrest of two men after explosives allegedly intended for illegal sale were discovered at a house in Meloding.

The suspects, aged 37 and 47, were arrested on Tuesday, 14 July, during a joint operation by the Welkom Anti-Gang Unit (AGU) and Thabong Crime Intelligence.

According to police, officers acted on information that the suspects were unlawfully in possession of explosives and were allegedly attempting to sell them to prospective buyers.

The intelligence was followed up, leading officers to a residence in the Senzela section of Meloding, where a search was conducted.

During the operation, police recovered 11 cone-pack explosives inside the dwelling.

The police Explosives Unit was immediately called to the scene to safely secure and remove the devices. The explosives were confiscated and booked into evidence for further investigation.

The two men were arrested on charges of contravening Section 6(1) of the Explosives Act 26 of 1956, which prohibits the unlawful possession of explosives.

Police have not disclosed where the explosives originated or how they were intended to be used, and investigations are continuing.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Virginia Magistrate’s Court, where they will face charges relating to the illegal possession of explosives.

The successful operation forms part of ongoing intelligence-led efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat serious crime in the Lejweleputswa District and prevent dangerous explosives from falling into the hands of criminals.
