As Vergenoegd Löw celebrates 330 years of intentional land stewardship this June, the storied Stellenbosch estate has been honoured among the Top 100 Sustainable Hotels and Resorts of the World by the International Sustainability Awards – placing one of South Africa’s oldest working farms alongside the globe’s most forward-thinking luxury destinations.
Judges recognised the estate for “advancing a holistic model of regenerative hospitality,” citing its rare ability to weave together heritage preservation, ecological restoration and deeply meaningful guest experiences into a single, cohesive offering.
More than an award
For managing director Corius Visser, the accolade carries significance far beyond prestige. “This recognition affirms our belief that true luxury lies in authenticity, responsibility, and a profound respect for place,” he says. “For us, sustainability is not an added philosophy – it is the foundation of how we honour the land’s 330-year legacy while shaping its future for generations to come.”
The awards panel echoed that sentiment, noting: “In an era where environmental responsibility is evolving rapidly, Vergenoegd Löw demonstrates how heritage, ecology, and meaningful guest experiences can thrive as one cohesive offering.”

Face of luxury farm travel
The recognition reflects a broader shift in how discerning travellers are choosing to explore the world. “What we are increasingly seeing is that the growth of luxury farm-based hospitality is being shaped by a desire for calm, restorative and regenerative stays on working farms,” says Visser, “where exceptional local wine and culinary culture are matched by visible care for the land and its heritage. Today’s travellers are drawn to deeper cultural connection and wellness rather than ostentation – and each subtle shift in season creates new opportunities for activities and experiences.”
Beyond the cellar
Situated at the gateway to the Stellenbosch Winelands, the 160-hectare mixed-farming estate invites lovers of culture, fine wine and sustainable travel into the living story of one of South Africa’s most remarkable heritage destinations.
At its heart is an award-winning winery and two reimagined top restaurants – one of which, conceived by celebrated gastronomist Michelle Theron, is scheduled to reopen in October 2025. Guests stay in a premier collection of individually appointed ultra-luxury suites, each featuring its own spa bath or heated swimming pool, with floor-to-ceiling views across vineyards or mountain ranges.
The estate experience extends well beyond the cellar and kitchen. Guests may explore commissioned works by acclaimed South African artists including Dylan Lewis and Manuela Holzer, indulge in the health and treatment spa, wander through indigenous gardens, observe local aquatic birdlife, or navigate the estate’s distinctive labyrinth and puzzle maze.
Heritage in action
Several prime examples of finely restored 18th-century Cape Dutch architecture grace the estate, collectively declared a National Monument in 1974. Vergenoegd Löw is a proud member of The European Heritage Project – an exclusive portfolio of heritage hotels – and holds the status of WWF Conservation Champion, recognised for its regenerative agricultural practices and the restoration of land corridors to indigenous habitat, efforts that have been actively underway since 2015.
This global accolade arrives at a defining moment, affirming Vergenoegd Löw’s position at the forefront of heritage-led regenerative luxury travel – and setting a compelling standard for what responsible hospitality can look like over the next 330 years.
