EASTERN CAPE – There are now four suspects in custody in connection with the murder of Eastern Cape champion boxer Zolani Tete.

Tete (38) was fatally shot at NU 17, Mdantsane on Thursday 21 August. A 27-year-old female passenger travelling with him was also wounded in the attack and remains hospitalised.

On Saturday 22 August, police apprehended two persons of interest, aged 22 and 30, in KuGompo City.

Eastern Cape police said in statement that the 22-year-old male has since been formally charged with murder and attempted murder — the latter charge relating to the injured passenger. He is scheduled to appear before the Mdantsane Magistrate’s Court on Monday 24 August.

The second individual, a 30-year-old male apprehended at the same time, has been released from custody after police determined there were insufficient grounds to hold him further at this stage. He remains a potential witness as the investigation continues.

Police arrested three more suspects, two aged 27 and one aged 28, on Sunday 23 August. One suspects was arrested in Mdantsane and the other two in Scenery Park. They are expected to appear in court soon.

“More arrests are expected as the investigation unfolds, and police are continuing to follow up on leads,” the police statement read.

“Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, SAPS is unable to disclose further details at this time. We caution the public and the media against speculation or the dissemination of unverified information, as this may compromise the investigation and the integrity of the court proceedings.”

SAPS commended the investigating team for their diligence.
