UPDATE | Police apprehend two for boxer Zolani Tete’s murder

EASTERN CAPE – Two persons of interest have been apprehended in connection with the murder of well-known boxer Zolani Tete, who was fatally shot at NU 17 in Mdantsane on Friday 21 August.

The persons, aged 30 and 22, were apprehended in KuGompo City on Saturday 22 August, following a swift and intelligence-driven operation involving multiple law enforcement units.

The pair are in custody and being questioned in relation to the murder, as well as the attempted murder of the 27-year-old woman who was wounded in the attack.

Ambushed in driveway

The 38-year-old boxer was arriving at his residence and waiting for the gate to open when two unknown armed suspects, wearing balaclavas, exited a vehicle and opened fire on him and his 27-year-old female passenger around 18:30.

In an attempt to escape the hail of bullets, Tete drove his vehicle into the yard of his property, but succumbed to his injuries.

He was declared dead on the scene.

Renewed appeal

“Due to the sensitive nature of the ongoing investigation, SAPS is unable to disclose further details regarding the motive or the circumstances surrounding the arrests at this time,” a statement from the police read.

“Investigators are following up on several leads, and more arrests are imminent. We caution the public and the media against speculation or the dissemination of unverified information, as this may compromise the investigation and the integrity of the upcoming court proceedings.”

The investigating team were commended for their swift action.
